Both are 1/3 HP cast-iron submersibles rated for continuous duty in a residential sump pit. Discharge line is 1-1/2-inch schedule 40 PVC with a check valve immediately above the pump to prevent backflow, routed up through the rim joist and out through the exterior wall, then to daylight where the lot slopes or to a pop-up emitter where it does not. Discharge exits at least 10 feet from the foundation.

Battery backup is a Wayne WSS30V or Basement Watchdog Emergency Backup System, sealed lead-acid battery in a cabinet mounted on a shelf above the flood plane — never sitting on the crawl floor where it will die the first time the pit overflows during a power outage. Backup pump piggybacks off the same discharge line above the primary check valve. Alarm is a wired-in float switch that trips an audible alarm at the electrical panel if the water level rises past the primary pump inlet without the pump activating.
